The Durant City Council made plans for summer in the city and gave out some special awards during the April meeting Tuesday afternoon.
During the Durant City Council meeting, Lake Durant rules and fees were discussed. It was agreed to allow the camping reservations to be extended.
Now instead of only being allowed to rent a campsite for two weeks, campers can reserve an area for an entire month if they choose.
This is being done in hopes that more people will be spending time at the lake. James Dalton reported that utilization of the lake’s camping area is currently low.
The new month long area rentals will be displayed on the city’s website, www. durant.org for the public to access the information.
There was also discussion of enforcing stricter ATV rules for the area. This discussion was tabled for the May meeting so more information can be gathered.
The council had questions about how to separate the rule from the general camping area and the deer leasing area on the land as well as questions about the current rules.
A new splash pad at Keithley Park will be ready for children this summer. It was reported that the splash pad is ready and just waiting on warmer weather.
The council also discussed renovations being made around the city. The city clerk’s office is being renovated and it was approved during the meeting to allow renovations to city hall.
The old fire engine bays at city hall will be renovated to create offices for the building. Council also approved the American Red Cross to move into the former Driver’s License office.
The Driver’s License office has been moved to 120 S. 5th Avenue in Durant where the former Police Department was located.
The Council also gave out some special awards during the April meeting. One was simply in recognition of Thomas Marcum for his service on the Durant City Council.
Marcum’s term on City Council ends today when Stewart Hoffman will be sworn in to take his place. Hoffman will be sworn into city council at 1:30 today.
Marcum said that he found working on the council to be easy due to the ease of the people he was working with.
He said he hopes Hoffman finds it as easy as he did. The council also recognized the efforts of student at Durant High School during the meeting.
Mayor Jerry Tomlinson read a proclamation celebrating the Durant High School Band “The Pride of Durant” for their accomplishments during the 54th annual Auto Zone Liberty Bowl.
The band won first place in a competition that allowed them to play during the pregame and halftime shows at the Liberty Bowl.
During the halftime show, the band played with the Temptations. Thomas Marcum said that he went to Memphis, Tennessee, to watch the band at the Liberty Bowl.
He said that he was proud of the band for the way they performed but the way they conducted themselves and the courtesies they showed to the other bands was “truly the pride of Durant.”
The band received a standing ovation at the meeting as Band Director Chris Gregg accepted the framed proclamation. All participating students will also receive a copy of the proclamation.
The council also gave an award to the First United Bank & Trust for its part in beautifying Durant. The bank recently remulched the parks in the city.
Bank employees, as well as family, spent a rainy Saturday putting new munch in all the city parks and the mayor said for this, the city is grateful.
