Durant Fire Department educates local children
by Jessica breger
Staff Writer

In honor of Fire Prevention Week, the Durant Fire Department has been putting on a series of presentations for local daycare centers and schools at the fire station this week.

Presentations will still be given until Oct. 24 upon request. The program is geared toward children in pre-K through third grade.

Three presentations were given to different schools and daycares at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday.

During each presentation, children were shown a video from Sesame Street on fire safety. The video informed children about what to do during fires and the ways firefighters help.

It also showed the different gear firefighters wear as well as some equipment they use to fight fires.

After the video, children were led to the fire engines. Here firemen demonstrated how they put on their uniforms and what they looked like before and after the uniform was put on.

Children were encouraged to interact with the firefighters in full uniform to allow children to be more comfortable with the uniformed firefighters.

Children were then shown the inside of the fire engines at the station. Children were allowed to walk through the engine to see the inside.

To end the tour firefighters allowed the children to take photos in front of the fire engine with its lights on. The sirens were also demonstrated for the children.
