Durant first responders celebrate local dispatchers

Durant Police, Firemen and Dispatchers gathered Friday afternoon to celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week.

This week is dedicated to honoring the telecommunicators or dispatchers who serve as the line on communication between the public and the first responders.

Friday’s festivities began with a cookout and concluded with a ceremony honoring local dispatchers and thanking them for all they do.

The Durant Communication Center consists of 11 dispatchers who answer calls for nine law enforcement agencies, four ambulance services and 19 fire departments in the area.

Until this year, the Communication Center has celebrated PS Telecommunicator Week only within the department.

This is the first year this sort of ceremony has been held involving the departments which the center aids.

Durant Police Captain Mike Woodruff said that he wanted to do more than just have a cookout for the dispatchers to celebrate them.

Woodruff and Durant Fire Chief Roger Joines put together the ceremony to thank the dispatchers for all they do. Both men took the opportunity to thank the dispatchers for their aid.

“My guys’ lives depend on you,” said Joines.

Guest Speaker Sarah Sherrer took a moment to read the definition of a dispatcher as outlined in the job description.

This definition outlined many duties a dispatcher had to carry out.

“This should say simultaneously,” said Sherrer.

Sherrer said that while she does not know any of the local dispatchers personally she knows a lot about them by the profession they have chosen.

She said that she knows each of them is dependable, a problem solver, good in high stress situations, a multi-tasker and humble.

“You are the first first responders, because how could anyone respond without you?” said Sherrer.

Several other including Mayor Jerry Tomlinson, City Council Member Stewart Hoffman, and Public Safety Manager James Dalton spoke at the event.

Lacy Dillingham was named dispatcher of the year. This is the first time this award has been given in Durant.

Woodruff spoke of Dillingham’s dedication, training and achievements as well as the volunteer work she does for the center.

To honor their dedication, each of the 11 dispatchers received flowers to plant and a flashlight. Allen Golden, Durant’s only male dispatcher, received a tool kit in place of flowers.

Durant Dispatchers honored Friday include Alice Hall, Amy Jarvis, Amy Brown, Lacy Dillingham, Sheila Saulas, Amber Cendejas, Allen Golden, Julie Thompson, Tamara Alexander and Beverly Lawson.

Two people have now been charged in a Bokchito drug bust that happened in May. Edward Grig Jordan and Karona Gayle Thomas are both being charged with making methamphetamines.

Jordan is also being charged with the unlawful use of a police radio. The bust occurred when the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office received a call advising them that Jordan and two other men were cooking the drugs in and RV on Jordan’s property.

When authorities arrived to question the men, nobody answered the door but police spotted bottles from a chemical used to make the drug.

Sheriff’s Investigator John Haislip obtained a search warrant for the RV and house on the property. Jordan and Thomas had come out of the residence and were being held in a police car at the time of the search.

While searching the premises police found multiple vials of what appeared to be methamphetamine, several cell phones, incriminating text messages, a pipe, a crock pot containing red liquid and supplies for cooking drugs in the bathroom of the trailer house.

All items were seized for evidence.

A Denison man drowned Monday while swimming in the Red River, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

Enrique Amador, 29, was swimming with friends at approximately 3 p.m. below the spillway of the Denison Dam in Bryan County, according to the patrol, and he was last seen sitting on rocks in the body of the river.

Friends called him and when they did not respond, they walked to their vehicle, and when they looked again, he was no longer on the rocks and could not be seen in the water.

Authorities recovered his body at 5:08 that evening in about four feet of water approximately 10 feet from the north shoreline and approximately 1,500 feet east of the dam.

The drowning was investigated by Trooper Greg Williams of OHP’s marine enforcement division.

Trooper James Reinecker of Bryan County, Cartwright Search & Rescue, the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, Colbert EMS and Corps of Engineers assisted.

The body was taken to Brown’s Funeral Home in Durant and the State Medical Examiner’s Office was notified of the drowning.

In other accidents, a man was injured Monday when a propane tank exploded at a mobile home on Timberline Road in Lakewood Ranchettes. The victim was flown to an out—of-county hospital to be treated for burn injuries.

According to the Lakewood Fire Department, a propane tank was being filled and it exploded while being pressure tested. Additional details were not available and the incident is under investigation.
