Polls opened at 7 this morning and will close at 7 this evening for the Bryan County primary runoff and school bond elections.
Monday evening, the Bryan County Democratic Central Committee and the Bryan County Federation of Democratic Women hosted a speaking at the Durant First Christian Church.
Democrat candidates Wayne Herriman and Rob Wallace, who are in a runoff for United States Representative District No. 2, spoke at the event. Two Republican candidates are also in a runoff for this office, George Faught and Markwayne Mullin. This office is currently held by Dan Boren, who did not seek reelection.
Also speaking were Democrat candidates for sheriff, John Bates and Kenneth Golden, who are engaged in a runoff today. Bates is a detective with the sheriff’s office and Golden is undersheriff. The winner of today’s primary will face Republican John Wyatt in the November general election. This is the second time in county history that a Republican has filed for the office of sheriff. Wyatt attended Monday night’s event.
Silo School District has proposed a bond of $2,350,000 that will allow the school to build new classroom facilities in the school and renovate old ones.
A $2.4 million bond for Calera Public School will also be voted on today. This will go to builing a new gym and classrooms at the school.
