Friday was a busy afternoon for emergency responders and law enforcement.
A water heater started started a fire at a Calera residence on A Street off Smiser Road. Calera Fire-Rescue put out the fire and contained it to an add-on room located in the back of the home.
Tenant Brad Lerum was home at the time of the fire.
“I thought I heard a rumble from the hot-water heater,” Lerum said. “I then saw smoke coming out the top of the door.”
Lerum began removing some of his belongings from the house, however, firefighters put out the fire before it spread to other parts of the house.
Shortly after the fire, there was a four-vehicle crash on Highway 78 south of Durant that the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said happened when a driver stopped to make a turn and the drivers of three other vehicles did not stop in time and a collision occurred.
One of the vehicles was knocked into a pick up that was traveling the opposite direction.
One person was taken to Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas, where he was treated. Firefighters at the scene said he was alert and declined transport by helicopter.
