DHS girls 2nd, boys place 3rd in Ardmore tennis tourney

It was another solid showing this week for the Durant High School tennis teams as they competed in the Ardmore Tournament.

The Lady Lions finished second in the team standings while the Lions ended in third place.

Leading the charge on the girls side was number one singles player Ally McCoy, who claimed runner-up honors.

She downed Joy Miranda of Pauls Valley (6-0, 6-0) in a quick opener and then dispatched Courtney Blackburn from Byng (6-3, 6-4) before falling to top seed Makenzie Raines of Duncan in the finale.

Durant number one doubles tandem of Rebekah Corson and Sarah Routledge also finished also placed second. They dropped Seminole (6-0, 6-0) and Ardmore (6-2, 6-2) but lost a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Duncan in the title match.

Ivy Nesbitt picked up a third place finish at number two singles after getting off to a good start with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph against Jazmine Diaz of Pauls Valley. She lost the second match but bounced Ardmore’s Tatum Willis (6-5, 6-2) for third.

The Lady Lion number two doubles team of Brooke Leroy and Rylee Bradford wrapped up in fourth as they notched a win over Seminole (6-3, 6-1) before losses to Duncan and Byng.

Durant’s boys groups all won opening matches on the way to strong finishes.

At number one, Guy Carey finished second as he posted win over Brandon Knottingham of Chickasha (6-1, 6-0) and C.J. Brooks from Byng (6-0, 6-5) to reach the finals where he fell to top seed Duncan’s Fisher Anderson.

Michael Cathey was fourth at number two singles, recording a 6-4, 6-1 victory in the opening match and then dropped a pair of decisions.

The Lions’ number one doubles tandem of Blake Barron and Dylan Lamb went 2-1 in the tournament to place third. They downed Seminole (6-5, 7-6) before a loss to Duncan, but rebounded to topple Pauls Valley (6-4, 6-5).

Micah Abrams and Jonathan Metts combined at number two doubles for a fourth place effort as they finished 1-2 with a 6-1, 6-5 victory against Western Heights.

Durant will be off until after Spring Break when they travel south of the Red River to participate in the Frisco Centennial tournament.
