BOKCHITO – While it wasn’t the start that Rock Creek would have envisioned, the finish was all that matters for the Mustangs as they downed Tupelo, 7-4, for the Rock Creek Invitational title on Saturday.

Christian McGowan got the start on the mound and gutted through some early difficulties to go the distance and record the victory. He allowed four runs on six hits but struck out five and worked out of some tough jams along the way while holding the Tigers at bay.

Tupelo built a 4-1 lead through three innings but was held scoreless the rest of the way while Rock Creek mounted a comeback.

The Mustangs pushed across four runs in the fourth to take the lead sparked by Austin Green, who finished with a game-high three hits including a home run, double and two runs batted in.

That was all the runs McGowan would need, but he got a pair more for insurance when Noe Alaniz smashed a two-run homer in the seventh inning.

Josh Eiler and Austin Bonner finished with two hits each as well as driving in one apiece. Darren Ashby, McGowan and Austin Montgomery added one hit each.

With the victory, the Class A 10th ranked Mustangs improved to 11-4 and ran their winning streak to six in a row.

“Christian didn’t have his best outing but I thought he battled it out and made some big pitches when he had to,” Rock Creek head coach Kyle Wingfield commented. “He had a few control issues and pitched behind early but came back and held them off the scoreboard the last three innings.

“We’re continuing to get better as we go along and hopefully will be peaking come playoff time.”

Rock Creek is slated to travel to Bennington for a Bryan County showdown today before tangling with Caddo at home on Thursday for its next action.
