The Durant Lions (0-2) are matched up at home this week against another rival Ada (1-1). Last week, the Lions suffered a tough loss to Ardmore and Ada is coming off a win over Madill. Ada loss their first game of the season to Ardmore.

In the game against Adrmore, Tre Harper rushed for 107 yards, 1 TD. But he will be missing against Ada this Friday night to due to an injury in the Ardmore game.

“Harper had both concussion and dehydration symptoms,” said head coach Randy Matthews. “After the game we took precautions. He won’t be back this week. He has been one of our hardest workers in our program and it’s a tough situation for him and our team. We got some other guys that will make the adjustment and be ready to go.”

On a play which looked like Ardmore had stop, Harper came from the chaos and ran for a 76-yard rushing touchdown.

“Harper made a couple of good plays, but that was an unusual thing,” said Matthews. “Layton was tied up, spun around and suddenly he pitches the ball out to Harper. It caught our sideline by surprise, that wasn’t something you normally practice. Layton and Harper communicated good enough on the play. You usually say no, no, no. But they made it into a yes, yes, yes play. A big play that caught Ardmore off guard.”

After the loss against Ardmore, coach Matthews sees what the team needs to work on and also what they are doing right.

“We got plenty of things that we need to continue to work on. There were some bright spots in the game, even though they were far-and-between,” said Matthews. “The kids responded and played hard throughout the contest. The main thing was the effort they showed. Of course, last week they (Ardmore) presented us problems trying to make us defend all the different parts of their game. But that helped us evaluate some players and see were we might need to make some moves and changes.”

This week Ada rolls into town and presents a tough game for the Lions. They have multiple threats on the team, but their quarterback is their biggest threat.

“Their coaching staff does a great job in preparing their guys. They did a really good job against Ardmore in their game and they got a win against Madill last week,” said Matthews. “They have a lot of different guys that they can get the ball to. Their running back was injured and didn’t play against Madill, but they switched some guys around and got the ball to some other people. Their quarterback does a good job carrying out his fakes and he is a big threat when keeps the football.”

On the defensive side of the ball, Ada can be a hand-full to deal with.

“A couple of their defensive linemen grabs your attention,” said Matthews. “Their linebackers are big, fast, strong guys and run to the ball real well. They got good team speed and quickness and get to the ball. That’s why they defended Ardmore as well as they did.”

Overall, the Lions will be tested. But it’s a test that they can pass.

“We have to stay discipline, stay within our assignments,” said Matthews. “Get everybody flying to the ball on defense and we need to execute on offense and keep them off the field.”
