DURANT — Southeastern’s (6-1) Benita Sanchez led Savage Storm softball players with multiple honors after an impressive opening week.

To top the list, Sanchez has been named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II National Player of the Week, following her performance during the opening week of the season.

Sanchez, a senior from Farmington, N.M., hit .737 for the opening week of the 2009 season, collecting 14 hits in 19 at-bats. She had an .800 on-base percentage, adding six walks to her 14 hits, reaching base a total of 20 times in her 25 plate appearances.

With two home runs, a pair of doubles and seven RBI last week, she is slugging 1.211 from the leadoff position and has played error-free defense at first base.

After a Tuesday doubleheader sweep of Southern Arkansas, Sanchez was named the MVP of the St. Mary’s Tournament, where she hit .688 while the Savage Storm went 4-1 on the weekend.

Sanchez, who was joined on the all-tournament team by shortstop Bailey Mathes and pitcher Marjorie Johnson, was 11-for-16 at the plate, scored seven runs and drove in seven. The left-hander had a pair of doubles and two home runs.

Sanchez and Johnson were also selected as the Lone Star Conference North Division Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, as announced by the conference office.

Southeastern will next be in action today when it travels to Stephenville, Texas, to face Tarleton State for a double header, with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
