A woman authorities said shot and killed her ex-husband Tuesday evening told a deputy that he was sharpening something to use against her, according to a sheriff deputy’s report.
Steve Weger, 58, died from a shotgun blast to the abdomen at a residence off Highway 69/75 south of Calera, according to the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities were dispatched to the residence at 7:46 p.m. after the Bryan County Communications Center received a call that a woman shot her husband. When Deputy Tim Harwood arrived, Cathy Weger, 50, walked out the front door of the home and according to the report, she said, “I shot him.” Harwood, along with a Calera police officer, entered the home and found Mr. Weger on the floor in the hallway. He did not have a pulse and was not breathing.
Bryan County EMS checked Mr. Weger and determined that he was deceased, the report stated.
Harwood asked Mrs. Weger if there had been an altercation between her and the victim and she said there had been an ongoing altercation for a while, the report stated.
According to the report, she said he was sharpening something to use on her and she then said “I shot him.”
Mrs. Weger was not arrested, according to the sheriff’s office, and Detective John Bates is investigating the case with assistance from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
Undersheriff Ken Golden said Wednesday that the couple had been divorced, although they had gotten back together. He said Mrs. Weger’s story was corroborated and that the incident appeared to be a justifiable shooting, although the district attorney will be the one to make that determination. According to court records, the couple was granted a divorce in January 2005, and in February 2007, Mrs. Weger obtained a protective order against Mr. Weger that was dismissed four days later because she told the court she did not want a protective order at that time.
No charges have been filed in the case and upon completion of the investigation, a report will be turned over to Bryan County District Attorney Emily Redman to review.
