The Durant City Council began its monthly meeting with a moment of silence Tuesday. Before tending to business, Mayor Jerry Tomlinson asked for a moment of silence to remember those lost 11 years ago on September 11.
After the moment of silence business got underway, the council refused one man’s claim to compensate him for charges from an impound fee.
The fee occurred when the man was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The man was later found innocent but his car had been impounded and he was charged $163.42. Oklahoma Municipal Assurance Group found no liability on the City’s part, so the man will not be reimbursed.
The council approved the adoption of a mutual aid Agreement between Durant and Caney. With this agreement the two cities will assist each other in any emergency or disaster that has not been declared by the governor of the affected city.
This will include natural disasters, technological hazards and man-made disasters. The two cities also agree to have mutual cooperation in emergency related exercises, testing and other training activities.
The council then approved the painting of Durant Fire Department’s newly acquired water tender/tanker truck.
The truck will be painted by students at the Kiamichi Technology Center in Hugo as a community service project and will be of no cost to the city.
Also at no cost to the city, the water tower on Waldron Road will be receiving the patch of the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team Unit.
While the water tower is under renovation anyway, the unit will be allowed to paint its patch on the northwest side of the water tower.
This is with the stipulation the unit pays for all supplies and labor to paint the patch.
The sidewalks at the Durant Multi Sports Complex will be receiving repairs. The city granted $10,00 for repairs to the sidewalks. Only the places that are deemed dangerous will be repaired.
Council also approved the use of Rustin Concrete to create a concrete parking lot at Lloyd Plyler Park. The parking lot is currently graveled.
The former police station at 120 S. 5th Ave. will be remodeled. The building will house the Driver’s License Division after the remodel.
In public hearings, the council approved a request for change in zoning permit for a future day care center.
The center had filed on July 20 for an Agricultural District to a Highway Commercial and Recreation District.
This change will make the permit more restrictive so that no commercial buildings can be built on the land. The after- hours day care facility will be located at 3916 W. University Blvd.
