TULSA - The Durant Lions (1-5 overall, 1-2 in district) found their hostile host the Tulsa Memorial Chargers to be a tough foe and fell 57-20 on a cold and windy Friday night in Tulsa.
The Lions running back Dakota Diessner topped the century mark for the second time this season with 123 rushing yards on 32 attempts and scored two rushing touchdowns. QB Zac Cater finished the night 12-for-25 with 73 yards passing and throwing one touchdown and 2 picks. WR Blake Wilson had 4 catches for 36 yards and a receiving touchdown. On defense: Will Engle had 7 solo tackles and Diessner also recorded 7 solo tackles and forced a fumble.
The Lions had trouble with something they had few of all year, turnovers.
“We had seven turnovers tonight. I believe we have had only 4 or 5 (turnovers) in five games. And we had one lost fumble all year.” said head coach Bryon Cordell, “We didn’t give ourselves a chance with the turnovers. Hey, they forced them and we have to do a better job of holding onto the football.”
But the Lion defense also forced four turnovers.
The Chargers offense broke big plays on the Lions defense and it began in the first quarter.
After the Lions had to punt on first posession, the Chargers went to work and drove down the field in and scored in a mere 20 seconds. The 2-point conversion was good and the Lions trailed 8-0.
Durant would fumble the ball on its next possession and Chargers recovered at the Lions 34 yard line. Four plays later, the Chargers scored and made another 2-point conversion and led 16-0.
The Chargers had the ball again and driving when Diessner recovers a fumble by the Chargers at the their own 43 yard line with 3:55 left in the first quarter.
The Lions would put together a seven play drive that was opened up by two big runs by Diessner. The Lions were knocking on the door, sitting at the Chargers 16 yard line. Then Diessner would pound the rock into the endzone for score and cut into the Chargers lead, 16-6.
But the Chargers answered back and swiftly.
The Chargers had the ball at the Lions 44 yard line after the kick return. In one play Tulsa scored a rushing touchdown to put them up 22-6.
The Lions began the second quarter with a lost fumble at its own 44 yard line and five plays later the Chargers scored extend the lead to 30-6 and and later scored again before the half and led 37-6.
Tulsa would continue to score and led 51-6 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but Durant showed that Lion Pride and didn’t quit.
Durant began the fourth with the ball, a possession carried over from the third quarter, and drove down the field in 15 plays and scored on a 2 yard run by Diessner.
Then in the closing seconds, Durant would score on a pass and catch from Cater to Wilson to make the final score 57-20.
“I talked to the team after the game and told them that they can’t pull apart right now. We’ve got to pull together, nobody points fingers.” said Cordell, “We’ve got to get better. If we need to makes changes we’ll make them.”
