The Durant Police Department’s Honor Guard presented the flags during the regular meeting of the Durant City Council on Tuesday.
The honor guard was formed in late 2011 and since then, has performed at several functions, including ball games and the police department’s open house.
After presenting the flags, the guard led the council and those in attendance in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
Durant Mayor Jerry Tomlinson praised the honor guard.
“Everyone in here could feel that pride and honor for those few minutes,” Tomlinson said.
All Durant city employees will receive an annual bonus of $350.00 on Dec. 14. The council approved bonuses for 225 employees, plus six part-time temporary positions. The total cost of the bonuses is $81,550, and according to the city, the 2012-2013 fiscal year budget included $83,950.00 to cover the bonuses.
In other action, the council voted to lower the speed limit in the Linden Woods Subdivision from 30 miles per hour to 20 miles per hour and install “children at play” signs adjacent to the park. This action was taken after the city received a petition from citizens.
The Durant Water Treatment Plant received a Water Fluoridation Quality Award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The award recognizes public water systems that adjust the fluoride concentration in drinking water and achieve a monthly fluoride level that is in the optimal range for good oral health to help prevent tooth decay, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Health.
A city ordinance on road construction was repealed and a new one was put in its place. The new ordinance requires that all earth work paving, materials and methods used for construction of streets shall conform to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation standard specifications for highway construction.
The Durant Airport Authority, which is made up of city council members, voted to move forward with negotiations to host an international air meet in June at Durant Regional Airport. Dan Craige, chair of the airport advisory committee, said the event will be for pilots who compete in cross country races. The event is not for the public although citizens may have the opportunity to come out and view the airplanes.
The council also approved the following items:
- Accepted a$7,695 Bureau of Justice Assistance grant to purchase bulletproof vests for the Durant Police Department
- Accepted the resignation of Leslie Webster from the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
- Approved 5-K run event by Durant High School on Dec. 8
- Accepted drain flume easements at Remington Hills
- Authorized to extend patching/crack sealing by the street department for an additional three months
- Approved spending $25,000 to upgrade mobile band radios to meet FCC compliance regulations
- Authorized to advertise for bids and spend grant money to rehabilitate the water tower at Durant Regional Airport
- Approved Economic Development Administration Water Storage Improvements grant on North Ninth Avenue,
- Voted to apply for a grant to fix drainage problems at Durant Middle School
- Approved resolution for roadway improvements on Waldron Drive
