The Southeastern women’s basketball youth movement didn’t get very far in a Wednesday loss to Northeastern, 80-57 in the home opener at Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

The freshman-heavy Savage Storm lineup shot 32 percent from the field – including a dismal 21 percent (6-28) in the first half. But the new ladies settled into their home floor nicely, as freshmen contributed 23 of the Storm’s 29 bench points.

“Obviously now they have to start listening to us a little closer,” said Storm Coach Darin Grover. “Today was not by any stretch acceptable. Everything from effort to execution, we’ve got to look at the game film and learn from these mistakes.”

Southeastern defense started on a rampage, forcing two consecutive shot-clock violations against the RiverHawks in their first two possessions. A few minutes later, Northeastern held a 15-5 lead. The RiverHawks led 41-22 by halftime.

The second half was a little closer at 39-35 in favor of Northeastern, as the Storm bench came alive to drop a 32-point RiverHawk lead into the upper teens.

“It’s no fun to get beat, but you can play a lot of people,” Grover said. “We need people to step up, start executing , hit shots and not turn the ball over. They are a few months removed from high school basketball, so it’s a tough learning curve.”

McKinney (Texas) freshman Breana Small-Peppers (14.5 ppg in two games) scored seven points and collected seven boards before leaving the game with an ankle injury in the second half. Her condition was not immediately known after the game.

Durant freshman Taylor Richards scored six to go with five assists, Melissa (Texas) freshman Shelby Hill had five, and Madison Thames of Mt. Vernon, Texas hit a three pointer.

Bailey Welch led the Storm with 11 points. Emily Williams added seven. Four RiverHawks reached double figures in the non-conference contest.

Southeastern’s ladies (now 0-2) will host OCU on Monday, Nov. 19 in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
