Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Thursday for suspicion of burglary after a citizen obtained a tag number and contacted authorities.

Deputy Joey Tucker responded at 10:03 a.m. Thursday to the area of Leavenworth Trail and McIntosh Road in Mead after someone reported suspicious activity in the area. The man who reported the activity obtained the tag number on the vehicle and when Deputy Tucker arrived, he said he observed a man drive into his neighbor’s driveway on Leavenworth Trail and then saw him on the front porch. The man told the witness he had been lost and he then left.

During the investigation, Tucker learned that the front door of the home had been kicked in, and after speaking with the homeowner, it was determined that two firearms were missing.

Tucker gave the tag information to Sheriff’s Investigator John Bates, who learned who the vehicle was registered to, and that person told Bates he had sold it to a man named Matthew Dennis Weaver, 21, according to an affidavit.

Deputies then went to a home in the 800 block of Sunny Meadows Drive in Durant where a Ford Focus was parked that matched the one observed at the crime scene. Weaver was arrested at the home and when Tucker asked him if he knew why he was being arrested, he said he had messed up and that stolen items, plus some marijuana, were inside the vehicle, the affidavit states.

The two firearms, a rolled cigar containing a green, leafy substance, 48 Xanax pills and a marijuana pipe were found inside the vehicle, according to the affidavit. Weaver was booked into jail for suspicion of second-degree burglary and drug possession. The District Attorney’s Office will be reviewing the report to determine charges.

In other thefts, two people have been charged this week in separate burglaries. Derek Lee Stonebarger, 20, Durant, was charged with four counts of second-degree burglary. Stonebarger is accused of burglarizing a home and automobile in the 1400 block of West Locust Street, plus a residence and vehicle in the 500 block of North 15th Avenue. The charges were filed following an investigation by Durant Police.

James Emerson Jr., 30, Durant, is charged with second-degree burglary and false declaration of ownership in pawn. He is accused of burglarizing a building on Highway 22 in Kenefic last month and also pawning a chain saw that was stolen, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies have investigated several other thefts this month. Eric Ridenour told Deputy Tim Harwood that his home in the 2000 block of Church Road had been burglarized. A television, DVD player, gold necklace and tool box were stolen.

Deputy Harwood investigated another theft in the 4400 block of Wade Road. Samuel Everhart said approximately 46 gallons of fuel had been removed from a fuel tank and upon entering his shop building, he discovered that two chain saws were missing.

In other news, emergency personnel responded to an accident this morning in the northbound lanes of Highway 69/75, north of Platter Road, according to Calera Police. Additional details were not available at press time.
