OWENSBORO, Ky. – Southeastern put three players in double-digits, but also saw three players take early exits in an 83-79 overtime loss to Shaw in game one of the Glenn Young Invitational hosted by Kentucky Wesleyan in Owensboro, Ky.
The Savage Storm suffer their first loss on the young season, slipping to 4-1 on the year and will face Concordia, who fell to KWC 96-80 in the first game of the night, on Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m.
Just one day after Thanksgiving, SE could be very thankful for the play of Chris Roussell who turned in 19 points, four rebounds and four assists while playing 44 of the possible 45 minutes in the contest.
He was joined by Mateus Oliveira who turned in his best game yet in an SE uniform, hitting 8-of-11 from the field for 17 points with five rebounds in 29 minutes before making an early exit with five fouls.
Steven Kohli joined them in double-figures with 12 points and posted a game-high nine rebounds as Southeastern held a 36-to-33 edge on the glass.
“I thought we battled hard,” said head coach Kelly Green. “Early on we were moving the ball well,” he continued, “And we did a good job of executing, but I thought we got a little stagnant when we got in foul trouble. But I was proud of our guys. We kept battling.”
One thing the squad is not likely thankful for is officiating, as SE was called for 25 fouls as opposed to just 13 for Shaw as well as a pair of technical fouls. The guys in stripes sent three Storm players to the bench with five fouls and Southeastern fell by just four points despite a difference of 33 free throw attempts.
SE was 7-of-12 from the stripe, while the Bears were 33-of-45, which turned out to be more than enough to tip the scales in what turned into a battle of attrition for the Storm.
“They kind of exploited us when we got our two big guys in trouble,” said Green of the contest.
Travis Timmons turned in a nine point, seven assists performance with a pair of steals, meanwhile Andis Malahovskis turned in a seven rebound outing.
The Storm shot 47.1 percent from the field as a team, including a 34.8 percent mark from long range.
SE also held the advantage in points off turnovers, second chance points, bench points and points in the paint.
Southeastern saw its lead balloon in the second half to as much as 15, but Shaw would whittle that down over the final 10 minutes, even taking a brief one point lead with 4:13 to play at 61-60.
The Storm would regain the lead and hold it until Latrail McCoy would draw a foul on a three point try and hit all three free throws with 19 seconds to play to knot the score at 68-68.
Kohli would haul in an offensive rebound on a Timmons jumper, but his put back at the buzzer would rattle out and leave the game knotted at 68-68.
“The other night Union rolls one out at the buzzer,” said Green of the near miss, “And tonight we rolled one out the buzzer.”
The Bears would score the first five points of overtime and force SE to play catch up the entire time.
Timmons and Veljko Lukic would each hit threes to keep Southeastern within one possession and when Kohli sank a three with 31 seconds to play the Storm would trail by just one point at 80-79.
Shaw’s Curtis Hines would hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead back to three points with 27 second left and a pair of SE looks at the basket would come up empty and following one more free throw for the Bears the final score would sit at 83-79.
SU scored first in the contest and led 4-0 early, but a 7-0 run would give SE the lead.
A Shaw three would tie the score, but Oliveira would answer with a layup and the Storm would never trail for the remainder of the half.
The first half advantage would grow to a 14 point lead when Andris Misters hit a layup with 4:43 to play in the first half to cap a 10-0 SE run.
The lead would not dip below double-digits for the remaining four-plus minutes of action with Southeastern settling on a 35-25 lead at the break.
