Demons double up Durant 70-35
DUNCAN – The Durant Lions had few answers for the quickness of the Duncan Demons and got doubled up on Friday in a 70-35 loss.
It was the first loss on the new season following an emotional victory earlier in the week. The Lions (1-1) now look forward to hosting McAlester on Tuesday. It will be the first game of the season for the Buffs following their deep football playoff run.
Durant built an early 8-4 lead before the Demons managed a 15-0 run sparked by a pair of offensive fouls against the Lions. It’s fair to say the hometown whistles did not go Durant’s way all evening.
Zac Cater stopped the run with a three ball but Durant trialed 19-11 at that point. Duncan would build a double-digit lead.
Will Engle’s sweet reverse layup and a breakaway basket for Tyler Stovall just before the half only minimized the damage as the Demons took a 34-21 lead into the break.
The second half was all Duncan, as they outscored the Lions 36-14. The Lions shot 7-for-27 from the field after a more respectable 9-for-22 in the first half. They were 33 percent for the entire game, and 0-for-7 from the line.
The Lions only shot one free throw in the entire first half.
Cater led the Lions offense with 10 points, as well as a couple of steals and assists. Blake Wilson added eight, Will Engle had four, Cole Hughes hit an early three and was shut down from that point onward.
Five Lions were held to a single bucket: Cameron Scheussler, Jalen Harris, Derek Penz, Skye Lowe and Tyler Stovall. James Donelan was held scoreless but did collect two blocks to average 6.0 per game on the young season.
Lady Lions go cold in loss to Duncan
DUNCAN – The Lady Lions fell to 0-2 with a 67-51 Friday loss to the Lady Demons as Jamie Carberry poured in 39 points for the home team.
Fifteen of her points came on free throws, including 11-for-12 charity shooting in the second quarter. Carberry drove to the layup often, and just as often, whistles followed her.
But the Durant shooting played a big role in the Lady Lions’ troubles. After Sierra Wilhite’s three and Alexa Richards’ coast-to-coast layup saw Durant build a 5-2 lead, the Lady Lions went 0-for-12 for the rest of the first quarter.
Duncan (1-1) would take advantage of turnovers and a big bag of fouls to take a 14-5 lead after one quarter. The Lady Lions never found their stroke, shooting 27 percent from the field all game. They were 8-for-13 at the free throw line.
In the second, a three-point play from Katie Caraway would cut the lead to 14-8, and Rheagan Jones hit a three to cut down Duncan’s double digit lead a few minutes later.
The Lady Lions got within nine points on late threes from Kylie Manning, Jones and Alexa Richards – who also deserves credit for some hustling rebounds in the late minutes. But the Lady Demons closed the door with a 7-0 run to take a 16-point lead late in the fourth.
Nine Lady Lions got into the scorebook: Manning (10), Jones (8), A. Richards (7), Wilhite (6), Shelbi Barrett (6), Rylie Richards (6), Katie Caraway (5), Kenzi Clapp (2) and Morgan Steve (1).
