Durant High School has been raising money for health care in various ways recently. An annual T-shirt sale raised $3,500 for project Pink in Durant while a 5k and mile run raised approximately $1,250 for HOSA.
HOSA, Health Occupation Student of America, is a high school organization for students who plan to pursue a career in health care.
The run was held at 8 a.m. Saturday Dec. 8. The funds raised will go toward sending students in the organization to state and national competitions.
At the competitions, students will compete for high scores on tests in the medical field. Organization adviser Toni McLemore said these competitions give students experience in health care.
McLemore also said that the winners of these competitions are often eligible for scholarships as well. Approximately 50 people participated in the 5K and mile-long races.
All-around winner Cody Shelton from Silo school said that a teacher had informed him about the event so he and his friends decided to run.
McLemore said HOSA will be hosting another 5K event in March. She said that information on the event will be available on the Durant ISD webpage www.durantisd.org/.
Durant Cheerleaders have also been raising money for health care. During a recent T-shirt sale, the girls raised $3,500 that went toward free mammograms at MCSO for women who could otherwise not get the examination.
“It’s just something that’s important to us,” said Cheerleading co-captain Paige Hesser. This is an event that the cheerleaders hold every year Hesser said.
The girls sell shirts in November and encourage buyers to wear the shirts to every October sports event to show support and raise awareness for breast cancer.
Hesser said this year showed the most sales the team has had.
