DURANT- The Durant Lions battled it out with the Hugo Buffs on Saturday in the final round the Lion Classic. But the Lions were on the short end of the consolation game as they fell to Hugo 56-40.
The Lions leading scorers were: Skye Lowe had 11 points, Cole Hughes had 9 points, Will Engle had 5 points, James Donelan, Jalen Harris, and Cameron Scheussler had 4 points, Blake Wilson had 2 points and Dakota Green had 1 point.
It wasn’t because a lack of effort for the Lions loss, it seemed that the basket was as big as Grand Cayon for Hugo as they rarely missed shots.
It was a close affair in the first period, the Lions trailed 16-10 after the first quarter.
Both teams traded buckets throughout first period. The game was tied 6-6 with 3:48 left in the period, then the Buffs went on a 9-4 run to close the period.
Durant’s Scheussler put up 4 points, both Hughes and Harris each had a bucket, both Engle and Wilson went 1-for-2 at the free throw line.
However, Hugo began to pull away from Durant in the second period and built a 35-20 lead heading into halftime.
After Engle drew first blood with a mid-range jump shot to begin the second quarter, then the Buffs took over a went on a 8-0 run until Lowe stop the bleeding with a lay-up. After that, both traded buckets til the end of the period.
After halftime, the Lions made a push with a 7-4 run, but Hugo answered back with a 7-2 run to close out the quarter.
Lions were trailing 46-29 to begin the fourth period. The Lions couldn’t get stops and the teams went back and forth and the Lions outscored the Buffs 11-10. But Durant couldn’t close the gap and fell to Hugo in the consolation game.
The Lady Lions also had to face Hugo in the final game on Saturday in a battle for 7th place. Unfortunately, the Lady Lions struggled with miss shots and turnovers and loss to the Lady Buffs, 34-20.
Lady Lions scorers: Katie Caraway had 10 points, Shelby Barrett had 5 points, Rheagan Jones had 3 points and Morgan Steve had 2 points.
The Lady Lions came out hot and led the Lady Buffs 9-7 after the first period. Barrett led the way in the first quarter with 4 points, Jones went 0-for-1 at the free throw line, Caraway and Steve both had buckets.
The lead slipped away from the Lady Lions in the second quarter as the Lady Buffs outscored Durant 8-5 and took a slim 15-14 lead into halftime.
The Lady Lions shooting went cold, very cold after halftime. Durant would only score six points in the next two quarters as the Lady Buffs scored 19 points to end game.

DURANT-What looked to be blow out turned into nail-bitter for the Durant Lions in round two of the Lion Classic on Friday.
The Lions dominated the Denison Yellowjackets for three quarters. The Lions had a 38-29 lead over Denison heading into the fourth period, then the Yellowjackets began a fourth quater rally and almost upended Lions. But the Lions defense held strong in final minutes and beat Denison 46-42 to make to the consolation game.
Durant scoring leaders were: Will Engle had 12 points, James Donelan and Cameron Schuessler had 8 points, Zac Cater had 7 points, Jalen Harris had 6 points and Cole Hughes had 5 points.
The Lions began the game with a hot hand, outscoring Denison 12-5. Lion center Donelan score two points and had two timely blocks that stuff the Yellowjackets inside game. The whole Lion team got into the scoring spirit with Harris, Cater and Schuessler all scoring in the first quarter.
The Yellowjackets came alive in the second period, but it wasn’t enough as the Lions won the quarter outscoring the Yellowjackets 12-11. Again, it was a team effort from Durant. Engle scored 7 points in the quarter. Donelan, Schuessler and Cater all contributed to hold on to a 24-16 lead heading into halftime.
Durant kept the Yellowjackets at bay as both teams traded buckets in the thirds period. Schesussler scored the periods first 4 points, then Cater got into the mix and scored 5 points. Donelan and Engle rounded out the scoring combining for 5 points and sported a 38-29 lead heading into the final frame.
The Yellowjackets gave the Lions a scare in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lions 13-8.
The quarter began with the Yellowjackets going on a 9-4 run and trailed 42-38. Then the Denison would score the next four points to tie the game 42 apiece with 3:41 remaining in the game.
Just as it looked like the momentum was in favor on the Yellowjackets, their shooting went cold and didn’t score for the rest of the quarter and the Lions clinched the game at the free throw line as the Lions escape with a 46-42 win.
The Lions faced the Hugo Buffs for the consolation game on Saturday.
The Lady Lions didn’t fare well in its contest with Springdale Lady Bulldogs falling 52-38.
Turnovers plagued the Lady Lions as they couldn’t get in rhythm throughout the game.
Lady Lions scoring leaders were: Rheagan Jones, Rylie Richards and Sierra Wilhite all had 7 points, Shelby Barrett had 6 points, Katie Caraway and Alexa Richards had 4 points, Morgan Steve had 2 points and Kenzi Clapp had 1 point.
The Lady Lions were competetive in the first period and kept the game close and trailed 12-7 to the Lady Bulldogs. Durant’s Caraway had bucket and Barrett put in 3 points while Wilhite hit both of her free throws for 2 points. The Lady Bulldogs got 10 of their 12 points from the charity stripe.
In the second period the Lady Bulldogs pulled away from the Lady Lions, winning the 12-3. And had a comfortable 24-10 lead heading into halftime.
The third period was more of the same for Durant. Turnovers killed any momentum for the Lady Lions and were outscored 11-7 in the period and trailed 35-17. Durant’s Wilhite had 2 points, R. Richards had 2 points and A. Richards had hit a 3-pointer.
Suddenly the Lady Lions came alive in the final frame and won the quarter outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 21-17. But Durant could never close the gap.
Caraway, Barrett and Wilhite combined for a 8-4 run in the beginning minutes of the period. By the 3 minute mark, the Lady Lions were down 41-31, with the help form Steve’s bucket and Jones 4 points from the free throw line.
Durant fought back but couldn’t get stops as both teams traded buckets and by the 2 minute mark, the Lions trailed 38-47.
But after that the Lady Lions shooting went cold and the Lady Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run to close out the game.
The Lady Lions went on to play the Hugo Lady Buffs in the final round of the tourney on Saturday.
