Grover Marlin Young was born August 23, 1927 in Caney, Oklahoma to Grover Cleveland and Johnnie Young. His father Grover Cleveland was a World War 1 veteran and passed away in January of 1953. His mother Johnnie worked for many years for the Caney School system as a cook in the cafeteria. She passed away in December of 1991.

Marlin attended public schools in Caney, Oklahoma where he met his future wife Dortha Faye Rose. They were married on July 13, 1950 in Wellington, Texas. They were married 59 years and produced two sons. She passed away on November 6, 2009. Also proceeding his death was brother Melvin, a navy veteran, and nephew Melvin, Jr.

After graduating from Caney Public Schools he attended Murray State College for two years in Tishomingo then attended Southeastern State College in Durant receiving his B.S. Education degree on July 19th 1953 and his Masters Degree in Teaching in 1955. Marlin was an educator for over 30 years. He started his teaching career at Randlett, Oklahoma followed by Tom, Oklahoma, Utica High School, Wilson, Oklahoma then back to Utica until 1966 when he assumed the office of Bryan County Superintendent of Schools and held that job until his retirement in 1985. One of the highlights of his job was when he and Glendal Rushing would collect the money at the annual Bryan County Basketball Tournament.

His hobbies included playing dominoes, bowling, going deer hunting with his Utica friends, his son and grandson during deer hunting season, but the main thing he loved to do was to play golf. Highlights of his golfing career were every golfer’s dream of achieving a hole in one; but, he had four. He also liked to listen to country music at the Music Place and Market Square. He was a member of the Durant Evening Lions Club and Durant Elks Lodge where he served as treasurer for both organizations. He served in the military from 1942-48 as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corps stationed in Germany. Upon this return to the States he and his army buddies had a T-bone steak in Brooklyn, New York. He is a member of the Fairview Baptist Church of Durant, Oklahoma and the Baptist faith.

Funeral Services for Mr. Young will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, January 11, 2013 at the Fairview Baptist Church, Durant, Oklahoma with Rev. Bill Ledbetter and Mike Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Tom Lackey, Joe Springer, James Graham, Gary Dominick, Glendal Rushing, and Bobby Carr.

Surviving Mr. Young are sons Rick Young of the home, Clay Young and wife Debbie, Davis, Oklahoma. Granddaughter Morgan Robinson and husband Justin (great granddaughter Kyli Rae Robinson) Shawnee, Oklahoma. Grandson Josh Young and Karalee (great Granddaughter Roselyn Ann (Rosie), great grandson (Henry Clay) Bar Harbor, Maine. Sister in Law Doris Young, Madill Oklahoma. Nieces, Leanne Crow and husband Walter McAlester, Oklahoma, Susan McGhee and husband Kevin, Krum, Texas. Nephews, Donnie Young and wife Sharon, Tishomingo, Oklahoma, Tommy Young and wife Crystal of Armstrong, Oklahoma, Carroll Young of Moore, Oklahoma. Two cousins, Mildred Jones and Virginia Morris of San Antonio, Texas. Brother in Law Billy Joe Rose and wife Betty, Durant, Oklahoma. Nieces, Connie Bennett and husband Ron Durant, Greta Rose and husband Tony, Bokchito. Niece Annette Watson and husband Ronnie, Caney. Nephews Sam Rose of Atoka and Mickey Rose and wife Anita of Atoka. Also surviving is sweetheart and companion Patsy Graham of Utica.

Visitation will be held from 6-8:00 PM on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at the Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to the Fairview Baptist Family Life Center or Fairview Baptist building fund at 1200 W. University Blvd., Durant, Oklahoma 74701.
