The Bryan County Athletics Hall of Fame will induct three new members this year.
The induction ceremony will be held January 26 during finals night of the Bryan County Basketball Tournament in Southeastern’s Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
Aileen DaVault, an outstanding offensive player for the Cobb Hornets, Jimmy Patton of Calera and Tim Condor of Blue are the honorees.
Make plans to follow the action in the tournament and visit with the newest Hall of Famers.
THIS IS A HUGE week for Southeastern basketball.
After the Thursday-Saturday sweeps in Bloomer Sullivan Arena, Great American Conference action shifts to the road until January 19.
Southeastern’s ladies made it three in a row and ran the conference record to 3-3 while the overall mark is now 5-7.
The men are in sole possession of first place in the GAC at 5-1 and the overall record is now 9-3.
The latest conference standings have been released and Southeastern’s women have now clawed their way into the conference playoff picture.
Ouachita Baptist is in first place at 5-0 with an overall record of 9-1.
East Central is second at 5-1 (10-2) and Arkansas Tech third at 4-1 (7-4).
Henderson State (8-3), Southwestern (8-3) and Harding (7-4) are knotted at 3-2.
SE is alone at 3-3. Northwestern is 2-3 and 3-8, Southern Nazarene 2-4, 5-7, Arkansas-Monticello 0-6, 2-9 and Southern Arkansas 0-6, 0-11
COACH DARIN GROVER’S young ladies have an enviable/unenviable task coming up Thursday night.
Southeastern fans know it has never been easy to beat Southwestern no matter where the game is played.
That’s the unenviable part.
The enviable part is that most teams would love the opportunity to go head to head with a chance to really help itself and hurt the opponents in the playoff race.
Something has to shake out a bit this week. While SE is at SW Thursday, Harding is at Henderson State. That means the three 3-2 teams are in action.
Southeastern can take care of itself with a win at SW. Harding or Henderson State will lose.
You do the math.
Southeastern visits Northwestern Saturday. Ouachita Baptist, East Central and Arkansas Tech will be on the court, just not with any head-to-head matchups.
If things fall right, Southeastern can make a solid jump this week.
First things first: The Savage Storm must win to put the rest of it in play.
Bailey Welch leads the ladies with 12.4 points per game while hitting 91.5 percent (54 of 59) at the free-throw line and leading the team with 44 assists.
Haley Schaefer is scoring 10.5 ppg and leads the team with six rebounds per game and a season-high of 12 against Oklahoma Christian and Arkansas-Monticello.
Ronay English is in double figures at 10.4 points and Emily Williams is averaging 8.1 points and 4.8 boards.
Taylor Richards is scoring 6.3 points and is second with 41 assists.
Cheree Kiser averages 6.2 points and posted personal and team highs with 25 points against Monticello.
COACH KELLY GREEN’S men are all alone at the top of the GAC standings.
Arkansas Tech (4-1, 7-4) is in second place with Harding (10-3), Henderson State (8-3) and Southwestern (4-7) tied for third at 3-2.
Ouachita Baptist (6-5) and Northwestern (4-7) are knotted at 2-3.
Arkansas-Monticello and Southern Nazarene (2-4 and 7-5 each) are in a four-way tie with Southern Arkansas (5-6) and East Central (5-7).
Harding is at Henderson State Thursday while SE visits SW. A Storm win, along with either Harding or Henderson State losing, will be a positive for the Blue and Gold.
Southeastern’s sweep last week ran the home record to a sparkling 7-0 and 4-0 in Great American Conference play.
Chris Roussell leads the team with 15.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
Steven Kohli is next at 12.1 ppg while grabbing 7.1 boards. Mateus Oliveira is scoring 9.7 points and pulling down 7.4 rebounds. Andris Misters scores 9.6 points, Travis Timmons hits 8.4 and leads the team with 82 assists.
James Harris is scoring 8.2 points per game with 26 of 57 three pointers for 45.6 percent.
Roussell is shooting a team-leading 48 per cent (24 of 50) from beyond the arc.
