Kingston Boys – 46 Coalgate – 21

KINGSTON – The opening round of the second annual Kingston New Years Classic kicked off on Thursday with a full slate of games.

The Redskins cruised to a 46-21 victory against the Coalgate Wildcats in the sixth game of the afternoon. Colten Weaver finished with 13 points as the Redskins led wire-to-wire.

Jared Hayes scored 9 points with seven of them coming in the first quarter. Noah Hodges scored seven points and Marcus Burleson finished with six.

The Redskins led 21-11 at halftime and came out firing in the third quarter with a 6-0 run in the opening minutes.Weaver scored on a nice pass from Hayes to make it 27-11. The Wildcats were able to cut the lead down to nine points at the end of the third but the Redskins outscored Coalgate 17-1 in the fourth quarter.

The Redskins will play their second round game at 8:20 PM on Friday.

Madill Girls – 39 Silo – 35

Kaylen Sweat went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final minutes as the Madill Lady Wildcats held on to defeat the Silo Lady Rebels. Madill took a 33-32 lead with a little over two minutes left in the game and the Lady Rebels were unable to get the big shot to fall in the last seconds.

Kenslie Stanley led the Lady Rebels in scoring with 17 points. Rachel Grider finished with 9 points and Riley Newton scored 5 points. Hannah Bourne and Mary Grider each chipped in two points apiece to round out the scoring for Silo.

The Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter but the Lady Rebels closed on an 11-2 run to lead by three points. Both teams traded buckets in the second quarter and Silo maintained a three-point lead at halftime. An 8-0 run midway through the third quarter gave Madill a 28-25 lead heading into the fourth.

Rachel Grider tied the game 30-30 with 5:32 left, but the Lady Rebels struggled to score down the stretch and Madill hit the necessary free-throws to hang on.

The Lady Wildcats will take on the Tishomingo Lady Indians in the second round on Friday at 4:20 PM. The Lady Rebels will square off against the Rock Creek Lady Mustangs at 11:00 AM on Friday.

Madill Boys – 52 Silo – 50

The Silo Rebels and the Madill Wildcats wrapped up the opening round with an exciting game that was decided in the final seconds. With the score tied 50-50, Madill guard Kev’en Davis banked in a layup with four seconds left. The Wildcats stole the ball on the ensuing Silo possession and ran out the clock for the win.

The Rebels had several players that put together a solid all-around game. Kendall Shives led all scorers with 18 points. Lance House finished with 8 points and Leonard Sandler chipped in 7 points. Hunter Jackson scored 7 points and also took two charges at key points in the game. Tanner Clark and Jarris Hamilton each scored four points apiece.

The Wildcats led 10-7 after the first quarter but House scored all eight of his points in the second quarter to help the Rebels take a 25-24 lead at the half. The Wildcats opened up the second half with a 9-2 run and then Colton Clement knocked down a three-pointer to give Madill an eleven-point lead.

The Rebels cut into the lead in the third quarter and trailed 41-34 heading into the fourth. Midway through the fourth, Shives cut the lead to one and then Jackson took a charge on the next Madill possession. Jackson scored and the Rebels took a 50-49 lead with a little over a minute remaining in the game.

Davis tied it again for the Wildcats with a free-throw. Shadow Marris drew a charge for the Wildcats on the next Silo possession to set up the game-winner for Davis.

The Rebels will play the Rock Creek Mustangs in the second round at 12:20 PM on Friday. The Wildcats will play Latta at 5:40 PM on Friday.
