ADA — The Durant Lions basketball teams hit the road Thursday to play in Ada’s East Central Oklahoma Classic. Durant teams struggled in the first round of the tournament as the Lady Lions fell to the Edmond Lady Bulldogs, 43-32 and the Lions were blown out by the Stillwater Pioneers, 85-45.
The Lady Lions had their hands full with Edmond Lady Bulldogs in round one of the East Central Oklahoma Classic as the Lady Lions were plagued with turnovers.
Katie Caraway scored 4 of the Lady Lions 6 points in the first period and kept the game with in reach as the Lady Bulldogs led 11-6 heading into the second period. Lions’ Shelbi Barrett had a chipped in a bucket in first period.
The game began to slip away from the Lady Lions in the second period as they were outscored 11-5 and Edmond led 22-11 heading into the locker rooms.
Caraway made a bucket and Kylie Manning hit a 3-pointer for Durant in the quarter.
With 3-pointer from Sierra Wilhite and buckets from Morgan Steve and Rylie Richards, the Lady Lions began the third period with a 7-4 run and trailed 26-19 with 5:00 minutes left in the period. However, the Lady Bulldogs fought back and ended the quarter with 15-1 run and Durant trailed 41-20.
It was too little, too late for the Lady Lions in the fourth period as the Durant outscored Edmond 12-2 in the period, but fell to the Lady Bulldogs 43-32.
Manning had 5 points in the quarter. Caraway, Richards and Rheagan Jones all had 2 points apiece in the run and Steve had one point.
The Lady Lions head back to Ada today for a 10:00 a.m. tip-off time.
It wasn’t pretty or even close as the Durant Lions were out-muscled by the Stillwater Pioneers, who are ranked #8, throughout the game.
Missed shots and turnovers hampered the Lions and defensive swarm by Stillwater kept the Lions muzzled.
The first period set the tone in the game.Pressure defense by Stillwater kept Durant out of it’s offensive flow and trailed at the end of one, 23-9. Lions’ Cole Hughes had 5 points, Skye Lowe and Zac Cater had 2 points apiece. Lowe led Lions in scoring with 15 points.
The Lions came alive a little and made spot shots, but couldn’t get defensive stops on the other end and Stillwater outscored Durant 23-13 in the period. Durant trailed 45-22 at the half. Jalen Harris and Hughes had 4 points apiece, Cater had 3 points and Will Engle had 2 points.
The Lions came out cold in the third period. Stillwater began the period with a 14-2 with a 5:10 left in the period. Then Durant would suffer another run by Stillwater to the tune of 12-7 and the Lions trailed 73-31 at the end of the third period.
The Lions showed some fight in the final frame of the game. Lowe would score 8 of his 15 points in the period as Lions outscored Stillwater 14-12, but fell 85-45. James Donelan, Blake Wilson and Harris all pitched in 2 points apiece.
The Lions play today in round two of the East Central Oklahoma Classic at 2:30 p.m.
