So much for protecting the house.
Southeastern, without the help of assist-guru Travis Timmons, lost their first home game of the season on Thursday in a 74-48 decision to Ouachita Baptist.
Timmons suffered a knee injury last week against Arkansas Tech and is likely out until at least next week pending results of an MRI, according to Coach Kelly Green.
But the worst loss of the season on Thursday could just be a bump in the road, a sort of extraction of venom from the system. At any rate, it was the team’s third straight loss and dropped the Storm to .500 (6-6) in the conference standings.
“We looked fragmented right from the beginning,” Green said. “Some nights, things just aren’t there. It’s a true test of character. You’ve got to fight through adversity and show you can come together.”
Southeastern (10-8 overall and 8-1 at home) will have another chance to come together on Saturday, when they can re-group against a struggling Henderson State team at 4 p.m. at Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
In Thursday’s loss, the Savage Storm spotted the Tigers an 11-0 lead right out of the gate. Chris Roussell and James Harris scored the team’s first 10 points, but it took 10 minutes to get them.
Ouachita Baptist led 28-20 at the half. Southeastern’s Quinton Threadgill lobbed an inbounds pass to Mateus Oliveira for a basket which cut the lead to 10 well into the second half.
The back-breaker seemed to be a textbook alley-oop dunk for the Tigers which put them up 45-28. It was part of a 9-0 run. The Storm still trailed by 21 after a corner three from Andris Misters, and later the gap would hit 31 points.
Southeastern shot 28.1 percent from the floor (16-57) including a dismal 4-of-22 from three-point land. Misters led Storm scoring with 10, James Harris had nine, while Steven Kohli and Chris Roussell scored eight each.
