Several Durant residents chose to dine at Whataburger for Valentine’s Day dinner to help support the Boys and Girls Club of Durant.
A fundraiser was held for the club at Whataburger Thursday night. Twenty percent of all proceeds made between a two-hour period were donated to the club.
According to Boys and Girls Club of Durant Director Mike Coffman, the best two hours of sales out of the three-hour event were chosen for the donation.
Whataburger guests were greeted at the door by Boys and Girls Club’s Torch Club members. Torch Club members also helped with serving and cleaning from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday night.
“They’re all down here volunteering their time,” said Coffman. He said that he wants club members to know that it takes people’s donations to have the club at all, and that it doesn’t all come out of thin air.
Torch club members volunteering Thursday night also thanked guests for dining at Whataburger during the fundraiser.
Coffman said that he was told by management at Whataburger that this fundraiser received a better response than others.
Boys and Girls Club of Durant President Kari Walker said she had little to do with this fundraiser. “It’s for the Torch Club and they set it up,” said Walker with a smile on her face.
The money made by Thursday night’s fundraiser was also matched by a “challenge grant,” said Coffman.
Coffman said challenge grants match funds that are donated through fundraising events. This allows groups to work for the funds and meet a challenge to get even more funds.
“It’s a never ending process,” said Coffman. He revealed that there are several more events planned for the near future.
Coffman said that the club does not receive government or tax funding, making fundraising events such as this very important to the Boys and Girls Club.
