Southeastern baseball paid a visit to “Splitsville” on Saturday with an impressive 9-3 win over Harding, followed by a rough outing in a 5-2 loss.
The Savage Storm (8-7, 3-5 in GAC) and Bison (9-3, 3-2 in GAC) will settle the matter in the rubber game today at 1 p.m. at the Ballpark in Durant. The scheduled starting pitcher for SOSU is David Cagle (1-0).
The first game was a virtual highlight reel of Savage Storm baseball. Vance Woodruff went a full nine for a complete game win with six strikeouts and only two earned runs on five hits and three walks.
“Harding is a good team. But (Vance) came out and put it on them,” said Southeastern baseball Coach Mike Metheny.
At the plate, Nick Grimmett went 2-for-4 with a grand slam in a five-run third inning which put the Storm ahead 7-0. Ryan Salter had a pair of hits, scored twice and stole base twice.
Aaron Chalk was 3-for-5 with three singles and a stolen base. Chevis Springer had two RBIs, Tucker Alexander had a big day with a pair of hits, RBI and two runs scored, and Evan Ramsey also collected an RBI.
The second game started off promising as the Storm took a 1-0 lead on a pair of singles for Salter (run scored) and Alexander (RBI). But Harding put up a pair in the second and held a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning.
The Bison scored three runs in the seventh on two hits and two fielding errors and took a 5-1 lead into Southeastern’s final at-bat.
Ramsey belted a solo homer to make the final score 5-2. His four home runs on the season has him tied for second in the Great American Conference.
“Ramsey had a good day. We started to make good plays, but then we gave up runs,” said Metheny. “We let it get away right there at the end. (Harding pitcher Hayden Shirley) is 4-0, so he’s pretty good.”
Alexander had two of Southeastern’s four hits in the second game, with Ramsey and Salter collecting the other pair.
Marris went all seven but gave up seven hits and got three earned runs while striking out four in his third loss of the 2013 campaign.
