Madill, Ok. - The Durant Soccer teams packed it’s bags and hit the road to play the Madill Wildcats on Monday. The Lady Lions improved to 5-1 on the young season after a hard fought 2-1 victory over the Lady Wildcats. In the boys game the Lions slipped to 3-3 on the season after a 2-0 loss to Madill.

Girls game:

The Lady Wildcats are one of the top teams in 4A soccer and the Lady Lions played toe-to-toe and over came a 1-0 deficit for the win.

Rylie Ricahards is back protecting the goal for the Lady Lions. “Richards is one of best goal keepers in state, and this was only the fourth goal scored on her this year.” said head coach Jeff Garrett, “We have a pretty solid defense.”

At the 24:33 mark, Madill drew first blood. Richards came out of the goalie box to grab the ball, but a rare mishandle by Richards left the goal unprotected for a Lady WildCats scored. After that, Richards was a brick wall for the rest of the game.

The Lady Lions brushed off the goal and went to work on the come back. At the 17:10 mark, Lady Lion freshman Alexus Coxsey got a pass up the middle, she dribbled her way around a defender and scored on a laser beam of kick that went screaming past the goalie’s hands to tie the game 1-1 headed into halftime.

“She (Coxsey) is hard to contain. She is very quick, she can be underestimated because of her size. But she has speed and can handle the ball real well.” said Garrett.

Madill was on the attack in the second half and Richards made a save with cat like reflexes to keep the game tied.

With 8 minutes left in the game, Lady Lion junior Caroline Loyd had a direct kick, just outside the box, that went over the wall and scored the winning goal. “When she has a chance to kick the ball from that spot, she’s gonna hit every time.” said Garrett.

Boys game:

The Madill Wildcats made quick work of the Durant Lions on Monday night. The effort was there, but the Lions couldn’t get a score against the the Wildcats goal keeper.

Madill controlled the tempo of the game and kept it in the Lions zone for most of the game. At the 23:09 mark, Madill would score it’s first goal. Then 10 minutes later the Wildcats would score again and the Madill led 2-0.

The Lions made a valiant effort to get back in the game in the second half, but the Madill’s defense was to stiff to score against.

“We played good at times, but we had break downs.” said head coach John Wilmoth, “They gave effort all night long and they are doing what I’m asking them to do, we just got to keep getting better. All can do right now is take it one game at a time.”
