James Jerome “Spike” Erdmann, age 85, was born Nov. 15, 1924, in Webster, S.D., to Paul and Ida Erdmann. He passed from this life on Jan. 28, 2010, at his home in Mead.
He graduated from High School in Phillip, S.D., in 1943 and joined the Navy the same year. He spent 20 years in the Navy and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1962. He married Juanita Sally on Jan. 12, 1963, in San Jose, Calif., and moved to Mead, Okla., that same year.
He worked as a mechanic most of his life, on aircraft, boats and cars.
He enjoyed traveling, camping, raising and riding horses, deer hunting with his friends and family, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Spike was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Ida Erdmann; sisters Maggie McDonald, Claremore, and Catherine Houghton; brother Oliver Erdmann, Phillip, S.D.; and infant grandson Chad Berry Sanford, Mead.
Survivors include his wife of the home; brother DeWayne Erdmann and wife Mildred of Claremore; sister Mary Powers and husband Bob of San Bernardino, Calif.; daughters Claudette Sanford and husband Walt, Connie Trent and husband Wayne, and Donna Evans, all of Mead; grandchildren Tabatha Sexton and husband Brent, Tiffany Paris and Jim Blakley, Tessa Trent and Mike Covington, Chad Sanford and wife Jaime, Brandon and Brooke Sanford, Steve Pierce, and Constance Slane; great-grandchildren Kylie and Katie Trent, Karissa Smith, Kayne Paris, Veruca Svendsen, Trent Sexton, Daniel Hernandes and Kevin Slane; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Pallbearers will be Harold McDonald, Harold McDonald, Jr., Chad McDonald, Mark McDonald, James McDonald and Stanley Erdmann. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Lester, Floyd Swain and Bob Aubrey.
