Rock Creek to have bond proposition for school security, remodeling

There will be a runoff election April 2 between Matt Tarr and Bryce Segotta who are seeking a seat on the Bennington Board of Education.

During the Feb. 13 election, Tarr received 49 votes, 39.20 percent, while Segotta received 30.40 percent, 38 votes.

The other candidates for Bennington Board of Education Feb. 13 election were: Jaci Bates, 12.80 percent; Rachael Smith, 12.80 percent, and Jenny Gilbert, 4.80 percent. A total of 125 votes were cast in this election.

Also on the April 2 ballot, Rock Creek Schools is seeking $785,000 in bonds to fund security improvements and to remodel school buildings plus obtain fixtures and furniture. These would have an interest rate not to exceed 10 percent per annum and become due within 10 years.

This is the same proposition that just barely failed in the Sept. 12 election. Although 59.50 percent of the votes were in favor of it, school bonds require a 60 percent “super majority.”

In a letter shared after the last bond proposition failed, Rock Creek Superintendent Rob Frederick cited improving school security.

“As the person responsible for the safety and security of our students, I asked for the community’s help in providing for this need,” Frederick wrote.

He added that a community is only as strong as its school.

“We will push forward and do everything in our power to give these students the best because they deserve it,” Frederick wrote.
